The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly on the verge of bringing in former Colorado Avalanche star goalie Alexander Georgiev, signaling a major move to bolster their crease ahead of the upcoming season.

Georgiev was traded to the San Jose Sharks in a deal that brought over Mackenzie Blackwood in return.

Nestor Quixtan from Heavy.com writes the Maple Leafs boast one of the strongest goaltending duos in the NHL, but the major concern is their ongoing battle with injuries. That's why it would be wise for the team to consider signing Georgiev to strengthen their depth in net.
Last season, Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll alternated in guiding the Maple Leafs through a strong regular season. In the playoffs, neither could be faulted for how things ultimately unfolded.
However, depth behind Stolarz and Woll remains a concern. At different points during the year, the Leafs were forced to rely on third-string goaltenders, but Dennis Hildeby and Matt Murray didn't exactly provide the stability the team needed.
So, what are the Maple Leafs' options if either Stolarz or Woll goes down with an injury again this season? Given the lack of proven depth behind them, it's a legitimate concern.
Relying on unproven or inconsistent third-string goalies like Hildeby or Murray could put the team in a tough spot, making it crucial for management to explore more reliable backup plans before the season begins.
"That's where the Maple Leafs should look into signing Alexandar Georgiev. Georgiev is a decent backup at this point in his career and would be a fantastic third-string option to boost the organization's depth in the crease." -Quixtan

It's unlikely the Maple Leafs will be able to carry three goaltenders throughout the entire season. While it would be ideal for added insurance, the team's salary cap constraints make that scenario highly improbable.
"That's why signing Georgiev likely means sending him to the Marlies to start the season. Unless one of Woll or Stolarz starts the season on IR, Georgiev could become the starter with the Marlies." -Quixtan

Such a move would result in a Georgiev-Hildeby tandem capable of anchoring the Marlies throughout the season. Adding Georgiev to the AHL roster would not only provide stability in net but also make the Marlies a more competitive squad overall. While it may be a secondary goal, it's definitely one worth considering.
