Expectations were high for goaltender Alexander Georgiev heading into the season with the Colorado Avalanche.
Entering a contract year, there was optimism that
Georgiev would rise to the occasion. However, things didn't unfold as hoped.
Former Avalanche star goalie's future takes stunning turn.
Brennan Vogt from Hockey Mountain High writes that fans quickly grew concerned that goaltending might become a problem, though team management remained confident in the goalie tandem to start the season.
"Georgiev did not start the year off that great with the Avalanche. He would lose five out of the first six games that he started for them. This fired up trade talks right at the start of the season." -Vogt
Goalie experts who weighed in on the situation noted that Georgiev appeared off his game, showing a lack of confidence throughout. He struggled notably with stopping shots from the blue line, often allowing them to slip past him easily.
"In just 18 games for the Avalanche, Georgiev had career lows in almost every category. His 3.38 goals allowed average was the worst that he had seen since his rookie year. Failing to perform with the Avalanche led to his demise and a trade to the San Jose Sharks on December 9, 2024. The Avalanche traded Georgiev for goaltender
Mackenzie Blackwood,
Givani Smith, and a 2027 draft pick. They would also include Nikolai Kovalenko and two draft picks in the deal." -Vogt
As the Sharks sank toward the bottom of the standings, things didn't improve much for the struggling Bulgarian netminder. Georgiev appeared in 30 games for San Jose but managed just seven wins. His numbers deteriorated as the season went on, finishing with a 3.88 GAA and a .875 save percentage.
Georgiev is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, with the San Jose Sharks having announced prior to season's end that they do not intend to extend him a contract offer.
