Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly connected to $68M star defenseman Mikhail Sergachev of the Utah Mammoth, a divisional rival of the Colorado Avalanche, in a developing trade rumour.
Maple Leafs beat reporter Howard Berger fuelled trade speculation by revealing that the team has been in talks with Utah about Sergachev.
Maple Leafs eyeing star defenseman Mikhail Sergachev in massive trade rumour.
Charlie McAfee from Hockey Patrol writes that Maple Leafs beat writer Howard Berger reports that Brad Treveling's team has been in discussions with Utah's star defenseman about a potential trade, although salary cup constraints could pose a challenge.
"Told the #Leafs have talked to #Utah about defenceman Mikhail Sergachev. Age 27. Year 3 of an eight year contract. Cap hit $8.5 million. 53 points last season for the #Mammoth. Creative cap work would be required with only $1.9 million in current space." -Berger
Financially, it's not ideal. For the trade to work, Morgan Rielly would likely need to be included, unless Toronto can offer a blockbuster deal that convinces Utah to retain some of Sergachev's salary.
"You're adding a player who has averaged seven goals and 27.5 assists for his career, one that already involves two Stanley Cup wins. Plus you're giving Toronto a true two-way defender, as Sergachev has averaged 90 blocks and 81 hits for his career as well." -McAfee
Acquiring Sergachev would strengthen Toronto's defense and reduce the pressure on Brandon Carlo, especially if Reilly gets caught out of position. At 27, Sergachev is also four years and in the prime of his career.
The trade would depend on Reilly agreeing to waive his no-movement clause, as well as Sergachev's approval. With Reilly potentially past his peak and possibly off the team in a few years, now could be the right time for Toronto to capitalize and trade him while he still holds value.
