Former Colorado Avalanche veteran forward Charlie Coyle recently shared some candid insights following his trade at last season's NHL deadline, offering an unfiltered perspective on the move and its impact on both himself and the team.
Charlie Coyle was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the Boston Bruins last March, only to be traded again this summer to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Charlie Coyle drops truth bomb following trade last season.
Scott Roche from Causeway Crowd writes that by the time the 4 Nations Faceoff break ended in the late February, it was increasingly evident that the Bruins would miss the Eastern Conference playoffs. This left general manager Don Sweeney and the front office with a critical choice: maintain their roster or begin selling assets.
Sweeney traded several cornerstone players, including captain Brad Marchand, forward Charlie Coyle, and defenseman Brandon Carlo. While the deadline produced a successful haul of key assets for the Black and Gold, one of the traded players revealed that the outcome had been inevitable for some time.
"Former Boston Bruins forward Charlie Coyle admitted the writing was on the wall as the trade deadline approached in March." -Roche
One thing is clear: the Bruins were sliding in the standings and it was time for a long-overdue retool. After moving several players, Coyle, traded to the Avalanche said he wasn't surprised.
«The writing was on the wall. We just weren't playing that well and time was running out.» -Coyle
The writing had bee on the wall for a long time. Signs appeared as early as training camp and when former coach Jim Montgomery was fired. While the team improved briefly afterward, their performance began declining again after the New Year.
"It was a tough decision that Sweeney had to make, but it had to be done. A reset was badly needed. This offseason hasn't been promising in terms of the Bruins looking at a retool rather than a rebuild, but if there is one thing that was clear, and Coyle said it, the writing was on the wall." -Roche
After his trade to the Avalanche, he was moved again this summer and will now suit up for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
