Latest report reveals bold figure Cale Makar could be demanding in his next contract deal

The Colorado Avalanche have the NHL's top defenseman in Cale Makar, and with the salary cap set to rise faster than ever over the next three years, his next contract could make him the league's highest-paid player.
Makar is two years away from a contract extension, and he could be looking at an AAV of $18 million.

Dave Litman of NHL Trade Rumors spoke on the number we might expect for Makar when his contract is due for an extension in two seasons.
"But what will that cost them? According to Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton on Daily Faceoff Live, Makar's AAV could start with an 18. Makar has two years to run on his six-year, $54 million deal with a $9 million cap hit. But with the salary cap soaring in coming years, he could be in line to double his annual earnings." -Litman
That's a substantial pay raise, as the NHL's top players are beginning to approach the contract values seen in other major North American sports.
But will it be too much for the Avalanche to take on?
The salary cap is projected to reach $113.5 million when Makar's contract is expected to be signed, meaning he could occupy nearly 16% of the Avalanche's cap.
While his talent clearly justifies the figure, the question remains: is it too large a commitment when trying to construct a Stanley Cup-contending roster?

At just 27, Makar already boasts two Norris Trophies, a Conn Smythe, and a Stanley Cup. If he adds any more accolades before signing his extension, his contract could easily push the $20 million mark.
