The Colorado Avalanche have already checked off most of their offseason to-do list by securing Brock Nelson with a contract extension.
But there's still one potential move that lingers, one that could bring a true difference-maker to Denver.

Trent Finnegan from Denver Sports writes that
Toews, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and 2010 Conn Smythe winner, is officially planning a return for the 2025-26 NHL season.
With likely just one year left in his storied career, Toews is aiming to join a legitimate contender, and recent reports have linked him to two potential destinations: Colorado and the Winnipeg Jets.
After NHL insider Pierre LeBrun linked the Avalanche to Jonathan Toews last week, The Athletic's senior NHL insider Chris Johnston doubled down, emphasizing that Colorado is a very realistic landing spot for the veteran center.
«Winnipeg and Colorado are the most likely potential landing spots for him. And I do think he's going to get to the finish line on a decision in the relatively near future. He's one of the first free agents, that's going to pick their landing spot.» -Johnston
Although Johnston's comments suggested Winnipeg might be Toews' preferred destination, based on how he discussed the Jets' needs and the potential fit, he was careful to note that Colorado remains firmly in the mix as well.
«The Colorado Avalanche is in his wheelhouse, potentially too. If you're Jonathan, it's about the fit, it's about coming back to a winning situation which I think both of those teams (Winnipeg) offer him.» -Johnston
Johnston also compared Toews' comeback journey to that of
Gabriel Landeskog's. Could there be a better duo than these two seasoned stars joining forces in Denver for one final Stanley Cup chase?
«What an opportunity for a great story it would be. First of all, much like Gabriel Landeskog, I think people are cheering for Toews to get back." -Johnston
If Toews signs with the Avalanche, he won't be expected to match MacKinnon's numbers or contend for the Hart Trophy. Instead, he would slot in as a reliable third or fourth-line center, providing invaluable veteran leadership and a wealth of experience, offering insights that even Landeskog and
Erik Johnson might not possess.
