On Wednesday, the Colorado Avalanche officially inked veteran defenseman Brent Burns to a one-year deal worth $1 million for the 2025-26 season.

The signing brings one of the NHL's most charismatic and durable players to Colorado's blue line as the team sets sights on another Stanley Cup run.

Fans in disbelief after latest blockbuster signing.

Antonio Losada from Athlon Sports writes that at 40 years-old, Burns appeared in all 82 games last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, averaging close to 21 minutes of ice time per game. He recorded 29 points and played a key role in helping the team advance to the second round of the playoffs.
"The veteran, who was drafted with the No. 20 pick in the 2003 draft, is entering his 22nd season in the NHL, and has appeared in all 82 regular-season games in all of the last four seasons." -Losada

Burns boasts an impressive resume with 910 points over 1,497 regular-season games, a Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman, and six All-Star selections to his name.
"The Avalanche, who needed depth on defense, are betting on Burns as a bottom-pairing option and a veteran locker room presence." -Losada

Reddit users wasted no timer reacting to the news of Burns' signing, and the response was nothing short of chaotic.
"Where the actual (expletive) did this signing come from lmaoooo," one fan wrote, perfectly capturing the shock felt across the Avalanche fanbase.
"This man is always a Shark to me," one nostalgic fan commented, referencing Burns' standout years during his long tenure in San Jose.
"Fitting he goes to colorado when he looks like a sasquatch," another fan joked, poking fun at Burns' signature rugged look.
"A defenseman who's long awaited his name on the Cup joining the Avs? That's Joe Sakic's kind of move," another fan remarked, praising Avalanche GM's signing of Burns.
