Erik Johnson will always be remembered as a reliable, Stanley Cup-winning defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche, but the moment that truly stands out for him is his game-winning assist in the second round against the St. Louis Blues during that playoff run.
The assist led to the goal in Game 6 with 5 seconds remaining in the third period to send the Avalanche to the Western Conference Finals.
Erik Johnson's Game 6 assist against the St. Louis Blues will always be his shining moment.
Following Johnson's retirement announcementr, Will Petersen of Denver Sports highlighted that game-winning assist, looking back on the moment as a way to celebrate his career.
"Up 3-2 in the series against the Blues, Colorado didn't want to come home for a Game 7 after blowing Game 5 late. Tied 2-2 late in the third period in St. Louis, Cale Makar had the puck behind his own net. He found Erik Johnson, who streaked up the ice, then played the puck to Logan O'Connor. That led to a pass off the far boards to Darren Helm, who ripped a snipe to the back of the net, and the rest is history." -Petersen
Though the assist itself may not have seemed spectacular, it was Johnson's zone entry that truly made the difference, drawing defenders and creating the space for O'Connor to set up Helm.
Johnson says he'll never forget that play for the rest of his life.
"Yeah, I still get chills when I watch that goal of Helmer putting that in the back of the net. That was kind of a mental block that I think got everybody over the hump, not only the fans, but the players as well." -Johnson
The Colorado Avalanche went on to defeat the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Finals and then the Tampa Bay Lightning to capture their third Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Fans are hoping for a repeat of that magic this season.
