Former Colorado Avalanche and current New York Islander goaltender Semyon Varlamov doesn't appear to be ready to return to action anytime soon, he had to undergo season ending knee surgery last season.

It was expected for Varlamov to be ready for training camp but that doesn't seem to be the case, per Islanders head coach Patrick Roy who simply said "no" to him joining the team.

Semyon Varlamov expected to miss time with the New York Islanders.

Hunter Crowther of Daily Faceoff reported on the unlikelihood of Varlamov joining the Islanders by the start of the 2025-26 NHL regular season.
"The news comes as Varlamov, who last played Nov. 29, 2024 and has two years remaining on a four-year, $11 million contract with a cap hit of $2.75 million, has yet to practice with the team through training camp, only skating on his own. Varlamov appeared in just 10 games in 2024-25, posting a 3-4-3 record, a 2.89 goals against average (GAA) and .889 save percentage (SV%). After the season ended, the netminder told reporters he expected to be ready for training camp." -Crowther

Varlamov reassured fans that his physiotherapy is progressing well and that he should be ready for September's training camp. However, the Islanders had to take a different route with an insurance decision.
"However, the Islanders signed veteran goalie David Rittich to a one-year contract on July 1, fuelling speculation that the 37-year-old Varlamov wouldn't be ready in time for the upcoming season." -Crowther

Knee surgeries are never a predictable outcome, especially with goaltenders. It wouldn't be a surprise if Varlamov's return comes much later in the season.
