As the next season approaches, the Avalanche face a series of important decisions that could shape the team's future.
Avalanche poised for massive roster shake up next season.
Jeremy Tingly from NHL Trade Rumors writes that so far, there's been little discussions about a potential contract extension for Martin Necas to stay in Colorado. It appears general manager Chris MacFarland plans to take a cautious approach, likely waiting to evaluate Necas over a full season with the Avalanche before making any long-term commitment.
Samuel Girard has been lined to multiple trade talks over the past year. With Bowen Byram gone, he had a chance to take a bigger role on Colorado's blue line, but inconsistent play has held him back. Trade speculation around him is likely to continue.
"Colorado doesn't have a first, second, or third-round draft pick in 2026, so it's going to be very difficult for them to add ahead of the trade deadline next season.
It's likely going to be prospect heavy packages should they make a splash, or they could flip Necas for draft picks if the team is not battling for a playoff spot, which at this point, seems unlikely." -Tingly
Then there's the elephant in the room, Sidney Crosby. If the Pittsburgh Penguins stumble in the season, Crosby's future in Pittsburgh will once again come under scrutiny. Should a trade opportunity arise, the Avalanche would likely be one of the top two destinations for the future Hall of Famer, alongside the Montreal Canadiens.
There's plenty to monitor in Colorado, as the Avalanche face a challenging position regarding their trade opportunities for next season.
