A recent report has highlighted Martin Necas and Samuel Girard as the two Colorado Avalanche players most likely to be moved in a trade during the 2025-26 NHL season, sparking speculation about potential roster changes and the team's strategy heading into the new campaign.

Necas and Girard have reportedly been at the center of trade rumours throughout the offseason, fueling ongoing speculation about their potential departure from the Avalanche.

Martin Necas and Samuel Girard remain the top trade chips for the Avalanche.

Tristin McKinstry from Clutch Points writes that the Avalanche were active and daring in last season's trade market, and they could take a similar approach in 2025-25. With that in mind, here are two key players Colorado fans should watch as potential trade candidates heading into the new season.
Girard has delivered strong performances for the Avalanche, primarily serving as the team's second-pairing left-side defenseman. Despite his contributions, there are indications that Colorado might be exploring a trade involving the veteran blueliner.
"Girard was essentially displaced by trade pickup Ryan Lindgren last season. He saw time on the third pairing down the stretch and in the playoffs. Even when he did move up, Lindgren received the lion's share of the ice time. In fact, Girard finished the 2025 postseason fifth among Colorado defensemen in ice time." -McKinstry

Girard is projected to start the season as the Avalanche's second-paring left-shot defenseman. Howeer, if his ice time continues to shrink, he could become a prime trade candidate. While his market value is uncertain, a continued decline in his role would signal that Colorado might be open to moving him.
The Avalanche acquired Necas from the Carolina Hurricanes from the Carolina Hurricanes in a blockbuster trade in January, one of the most significant deals in recent memory. In exchange, Mikko Rantanen was sent to Carolina, the first of two trades involving him that season.
"Necas had a very good run with Colorado down the stretch. He scored 11 goals and 28 points in 30 games with the Avalanche before the postseason. In the playoffs, he added five points in seven games. It was a very promising run, to say the least." -McKinstry

However, the 26-year-old will become a free agent at the end of this season. When the Avalanche previously faced challenges in securing a star player long-term, they opted to acquire Necas via trade.
While it seems unlikely that Colorado would want to part ways with him, especially given what they gave up, the possibility of a move cannot be entirely dismissed.
