Colorado Avalanche fans are in disbelief after Sportico released its latest ranking of NHL franchise values, placing the team in a surprising spot that has many questioning how the Avalanche are being evaluated off the ice.
Sportico has the Avalanche valued at $1.81 billion.
Avalanche fans left stunned by unexpected new ranking.
Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that one of his favourite annual stories to follow is the NHL's franchise value rankings for all 32 teams.
"This year, franchises around the league rose in value by a combined 17% averaging out at $2.01 billion per team. It's also more than doubled since the average franchise value was around $1 billion in 2022." -Deen
The Toronto Maple Leafs top the list with a franchise value of $4.25 billion. The Colorado Avalanche rank 20th at $1.81 billion, slipping one spot from last year. Despite the drop in ranking, the Avalanche's value actually increased by 15% year over year.
"Colorado is slightly behind the Calgary Flames ($1.82 billion) and the Vancouver Canucks $1.87 billion). The KSE-owned franchise is also one spot ahead of the Minnesota Wild ($1.79 billion)." -Deen
Things are skyrocketing across the NHL, and it's visible everywhere. Kirill Kaprizov just signed a record-breaking $136 million contract earlier this week, while young defensemen like Jackson LaCombe and Luke Hughes are poised to earn $9 million annually each on long-term deals.
The NHL is entering a new financial landscape, and fans and teams alike will have to adjust quickly.
It likely won't be long before we see the league's first $20 million AAV, could Cale Makar be the one to set that milestone?
