Colorado Avalanche's Joe Sakic makes headlines with some regrettable comments towards his team's big stars

The Colorado Avalanche boast two of the top foundational players in all of hockey with star forward Nathan MacKinnon and star defenceman Cale Makar.
During the team's end-of-season press conference, Joe Sakic didn't hold back to say that as long as MacKinnon and Makar are on the roster, the championship window never truly closes.

Graham Tiedtke from Mile High Sticking writes that of course, every team needs key players to establish a strong foundation. But when you have star players surrounded by others who aren't anywhere near their level, it becomes a real challenge.
"While I'm not in favour of putting all of the pressure on MacKinnon and Makar, I also do not want the Avalanche to become a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have had many players make more than $10 million in recent years. Overpaying for underperforming is just flat out stupid. I'd be okay if Colorado signed one superstar in free agency, as long as they're not pushing one of their better players out the door." -Tiedtke
Martin Necas has also been quite the success story ever since he was brought over from Carolina. The catch though, is that he's been playing on MacKinnon's line the whole time. What happens if, god forbid, MacKinnon gets hurt for an extended period? Naturally, the outcome would hinge on who steps in to fill that top center role.
"We'll see what the future has in store for the Avalanche. Can they fill out the roster to lessen the pressure on MacKinnon and Makar? They need to, or we might hear some frustration down the road." -Tiedtke
It's still early to tell, but I'm sure management will bring in some additional pieces this offseason to take some of the pressure away from their big guns.
