Last season, the Colorado Avalanche strengthened their depth down the middle by acquiring Brock Nelson, and the veteran center expressed his excitement about joining a Stanley Cup contender.

The 33-year-old center signed a three year extension this summer worth an AAV of $7.5 million.

Brock Nelson recognizes the opportunity he has with the Avalanche this season.

Aarif Deen of Colorado Hockey Now spoke on Brock Nelson's mindset heading into this season. While he signed his extension pretty quickly, he still admitted to exploring other options.
"You'd be a liar if you said you didn't think of a lot of different situations,» Nelson said on Monday ahead of the Avs' annual charity golf classic. Nelson was acquired on March 6 in a high-priced deal that sent top prospect Calum Ritchie and a first-round draft pick to the Islanders. He became the latest in a long list of second-line centers the team has desperately tried to fit into the lineup since Nazem Kadri's departure." -Deen

Nelson made it clear that, in his eyes, there's no better place to chase a Stanley Cup than Colorado.
«I think there's no better place to want to win now, with the guys that are here, the talent that's here, the commitment to winning. From players on up, is as good as it gets. So from a player standpoint, you can't ask for a better spot.» -Nelson

Nelson spent 15 years with the Islanders, so making a midseason transition to Colorado was an adjustment, but now the veteran forward can fully shift his focus to hockey.
«We were able to move out here in early August, get the kids into school and kind of get into the routine to have them around, just kind of living their life, which is the new normal. It's still an adjustment and a change, but to get acclimated to that I think will definitely help." -Nelson

The addition of Nelson is set to pay even bigger dividends for the Avalanche this season. He brings a complete 200-foot game, physical presence, and veteran leadership, and with a full year in Colorado under his belt, he should be even more impactful moving forward.
