A new report has revealed the difficult the Colorado Avalanche face as they try to work out a contract extension with star forward Martin Necas, a situation that could have major implications for the team's future.

Necas becomes a free agent after this season and is waiting patiently to gauge his options.
Insider reveals Avalanche's looming contract dilemma with Martin Necas.
Jackson Weber from the Sporting News writes that at 26, Necas impressed through his first 30 games in Colorado, but with his contract year approaching, the Avalanche may find themselves facing the same dilemma they endured with Mikko Rantanen just a year ago.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli broke it all down, raising major questions about what the future holds for Necas in Colorado.
"I'm fascinated by what happens with Marty Necas and the Avs. Because they're right back in the same situation that they were this time last year with Mikko Rantanen. Didn't want to pay him what he was due, they ended up moving him well before the trade deadline back in January. Now, they acquire Marty Necas in that deal, north of a point-per-game player. And he wants to be paid. What does that number look like? How close is it to what the Rantanen deal looked like?

"If he has another north of point-per-game season, this is just numbers; he's going to be in that $10 million a year range. Which, man, you're just right back at square one. So, not an easy situation to be in if you're Chris MacFarland and the Colorado Avalanche." -Seravalli
Necas is heading into the final year of the two-year, $13 million deal he signed with the Hurricanes back in 2024.
Necas is due for a raise from his $6.5 cap hit, but $10M+ is steep. While he broke out with over a point per game last season, it was his first time reaching that mark in his six years, raising questions about whether 2024-25 was an outlier.
"Seravalli also mentions that Colorado likely could have re-signed Rantanen for less than $12 million annually on an eight-year deal, which, looking back on it now, would have been an absolute steal, especially given the numbers Necas is seeking." -Weber

The plan behind moving on from Rantanen was to free up cap space and build a deeper roster, but instead, the Avalanche now face the possibility of paying a similar price for a player who doesn't bring the same impact.
