Dan Hinote is heading to Tampa Bay, as the Lightning revealed Friday that the former Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup winner has been named an assistant coach under Jon Cooper.

Hinote, who will take over the position previously held by Jeff Blashill, served as the associate coach for the AHL's Colorado Eagles during the past season.

Former Avalanche legend makes a shocking career change.

NHL.com reports that Hinote played a key role in guiding the Eagles to the top of the AHL's Western Conference standings with a 43-21-5 record and 94 points.
The team led the league in both total goals (250) and a goal differential (+65), while finishing tied for fourth in goals against (185). Despite the strong regular-season performance, the Eagles were eliminated in five games by the Abbotsford Canucks during the Divisional Finals of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
"A native of Leesburg, Florida, Hinote began his coaching career with the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2010-11 season. He spent four seasons behind the bench in Columbus before moving into a professional scouting role with the club." -NHL.com

In 2018, Hinote became an associate coach with the U.S. National Team Development Program, working with both the U17 and U18 squads. He helped guide Team USA to a bronze medal at the 2019 IIHF U18 World Championship.
Following his success on the international stage, Hinote joined the Nashville Predators as an assistant coach for the 2020-21 season, helping the team reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs in three of his four years behind the bench in Nashville.
"As a player, Hinote skated in 503 regular season games with the Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues, recording 38 goals and 90 points. He also appeared in 72 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, during which he recorded six goals and 15 points." -NHL.com

Hinote was part of the Colorado Avalanche's 2001 Stanley Cup-winning team. appearing in all 23 playoff games during their championship run.
