One of the players the Avalanche added in the 2024-25 season might be included in a major trade deal this offseason.

Currently holding only $1.2 million in cap space, the Avalanche must create room to sign new players and complete their roster. Sadly, this means parting ways with a player carrying a big contract.

Avalanche committed to pulling off a blockbuster trade to acquire draft capital.

Graham Tiedtke from Mile High Sticking writes that recently, rumors have surfaced about a player feeling dissatisfied within the organization. That player is Martin Necas, who was brought in earlier this season as part of the trade that sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes.
"Colorado Avalanche could ship Martin Necas to Montreal Canadiens." -Tiedtke

The Canadiens hold two first-round picks in the 2025 draft, owning the 15th and 16th selections. As a team that is looking for extra scoring power, they could definitely use a boost, potentially in the form of a 26-year-old player with a solid track record of success.
"In return for Necas, I would ideally take the Canadiens' first of their two first-round picks, but as they are back-to-back, perhaps it might not be a huge deal if they acquired the second one. If the Avalanche made a trade like this, it would seem likely that the player they select with that pick would be able to make an impact right away. If not, it might not be long until the player did." -Tiedtke

Tiedtke also writes that forward Brad Martin is someone to eye for the Avalanche in this year's draft. While some see his as a dependable third-line center in the NHL, which fits the Avalanche's need for depth, others project him as a mid-first round pick. That's exactly where the Avalanche would be picking if they pull off a trade with the Canadiens.
"It makes sense to draft Martin if both of those qualifications end up being legitimate, because we don't need a first or second-line center right now. However, if Martin ends up being ready to make the leap, he could take over for Brock Nelson once Nelson's three-year extension wraps up." -Tiedtke

Regardless of whether this trade is being seriously considered, it's definetely worth keeping an eye on Necas' situation with the team moving forward.
