Avalanche on high alert after stunning report links Crosby to the Oilers

The Colorado Avalanche are on high alert after a stunning report surfaced suggesting that Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby could be involved in a shocking blockbuster deal with the Edmonton Oilers, a move that would send shockwaves across the league.
Crosby's name has been linked to the Avalanche and Montreal Canadiens over the course of the offseason, but it seems like another team has joined the conversation.
Jeremy Tingle from NHL Trade Rumors writes that all eyes will be on the Pittsburgh Penguins' performance this season. Should the team struggle, trade speculation surrounding Crosby is sure to intensify, and according to reports, the Oilers could be in the mix.

Recently, The Athletic conducted a round-table discussion on Crosby's potential destinations. While the Canadiens and Avalanche appear to be frontrunners, the Oilers were also mentioned as a possible landing spot for the superstar.
"The Oilers are a Cup contender with arguably the two best players in the league. If Crosby wants to go hunting for a fourth title, there aren't many better places to go in the short term than Edmonton. The problem is the Oilers are tight against the cap and are low on high-end futures, something the Penguins would want. Oh yeah, there's also that contract situation with their captain." -Daniel Nugent-Bowman, The Athletic
The Oilers lack a 2026 first-round pick, which could be a sticking point for Pittsburgh, especially with a draft expected to be rich in talent. If Edmonton wants to make the deal happen, they'd likely need to part with Matthew Savoie and Isaac Howard, plus additional assets, to acquire Crosby.
Keep an eye on these two teams, but it's all going to come down to where the Penguins sit in the standings around the Olympic break.
