A new report had laid out the harsh reality for fans hoping to see Sidney Crosby in a Colorado Avalanche jersey, revealing why a trade between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Colorado Avalanche is highly improbable despite years of speculation and fan-driven buzz.

Crosby has been linked to the Avalanche in a potential blockbuster trade to reunite him with his hometown friend Nathan MacKinnon.
Ryan O'Hara from Mile High Hockey writes that Avalanche fans and analysts alike continue to dream of landing Crosby in a trade, but those hopes remain unrealistically and unlikely to come to fruition.
"There is little doubt that the Pittsburgh Penguins need to rebuild. However, the notion that they would part ways with the very face of their franchise is laughable at best. While the modern NHL rarely witnesses players spending their entire careers with a single organization, Crosby remains an emblematic exception." -O'Hara

If such a trade were to ever happen, there's little doubt the Penguins would come out on top. While the Avalanche would gain Crosby, momentarily satisfying a passionate but sometimes fickle fanbase, the price would be too steep.
Colorado would almost certainly need to part with a significant package, likely including multiple high-value draft picks, forward Martin Necas (whose long-term future with the team remains uncertain), and possibly a promising prospect.
"From a broader strategic lens, the calculus behind a potential Crosby trade hinges on competing organizational timelines. The Avalanche would acquire Crosby-a generational talent and cultural icon-which would undoubtedly provide a short-term jolt of energy to the fanbase and locker room alike." -O'Hara

At 37, Crosby's prime years are limited, making his window for elite performance finite. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh would gain a promising future foundation in Necas, who is poised to become a consistent 100-point scorer. Another name that could be included in the deal would be defensive prospect Sean Behrens.
"In essence, the Pens would emerge as the long-term beneficiaries, stockpiling assets and youth for a sustainable rebuild. Colorado, by contrast, would be gambling on a narrow championship window-an inherently precarious proposition in a league where parity reigns supreme and nothing is ever guaranteed." -O'Hara

In short, while acquiring Crosby might offer Colorado a brief boost, the long-term benefits clearly favour Pittsburgh in any potential trade scenario.
