Colorado Avalanche on edge after clear sign emerges about Sidney's Crosby's future with the Pittsburgh Penguins, sparking intense trade rumours and uncertainty ahead of the NHL season.
Tom Banks from House of Hockey writes that Crosby's future has been a hot topic all summer, but now John Shannon predicts he'll stay in Pittsburgh, dismissing comparisons to Ray Bourque's departure.
"However, with the team missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for three straight seasons, questions have arisen about his future, with many predicting that he could one day leave the Penguins." -Banks
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently stated that Crosby won't be traded before the 2025-26 season, but according to multiple sources, anything could still happen with the star captain down the line.
"To this point in time, Crosby has ignored all rumours about his future, with many believing that it's entirely up to him whether he goes or stays, with GM Kyle Dubas willing to work with him on the future that he decides upon in the NHL." -Banks
With over $1,500 games played and three Stanley Cups to his name, Crosby has given everything to the organization. While some think he might chase another Cup elsewhere, his legacy in Pittsburgh and three championships there could actually make him more likely to stay.
In a recent episode of the Sekeres and Price Show, John Shannon dismissed comparisons to Ray Bourque, pointing out that Bourque hadn't won a Cup before leaving Boston, whereas Crosby has already won three. Shannon believes Crosby is likely to retire as a Penguin.
"I don't ever see Sidney Crosby leaving Pittsburgh; it's not a Ray Bourque situation where...he hasn't won the Stanley Cup." -Shannon
Ultimately, only Crosby knowns what the future holds for him. However, with the upcoming Olympic Games and the possibility of the Penguins contending again before he retires, Shannon is among many who believes Crosby will stay loyal to his current team.
