The Colorado Avalanche are on edge after a recent NHL report indicated a surprising potential destination for Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby, fuelling speculation and trade rumours that have fans and analysts buzzing.
NHL report announces potential new destination for Sidney Crosby.
Dan Rosen from NHL.com writes the Carolina Hurricanes, like 29 other teams in the league, are considered a potential "sleeper" option for Sidney Crosby's future, should he and the Penguins decide, biggest "if" in hockey, that parting ways is the best path forward.
The only team that doesn't really qualify as a "sleeper" and is instead considered a frontrunner to acquire Crosby in a trade is the Colorado Avalanche, and that's primarily because of Nathan MacKinnon. Crosby and MacKinnon share a close bond, both hailing from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, and reports suggest that if Crosby ever chooses to leave Pittsburgh, the chance to play alongside MacKinnon in Colorado would be highly appealing.
"However, the Hurricanes are an interesting option for Crosby and Co. because of the reasons you mentioned and, most importantly, they're a team built to win right now. If Crosby leaves Pittsburgh, it'll be for a chance to win a fourth Stanley Cup championship." -Rosen
Crosby should be taken at face value, he still has faith in the Penguins, believes in their direction, values his role, and recognizes the opportunity to help the team return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and contend for the Cup once more. While he's aware of the ongoing speculation and understands it, his commitment has not wavered.
"I'm worried about playing for Pittsburgh. I haven't seriously considered anything else." -Crosby
If that mindset ever shifts, then yes, Carolina could become a legitimate option.
