Avalanche Cup hero hit hard with unexpected blow to start the season

Former Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup champion Nicolas Aube-Kubel, who signed a one-year contract this past summer, has been placed on waivers, marking an unexpected setback as the 2025-26 NHL season begins.
Aube-Kubel is among the 16 players placed on the NHL waiver wire today, according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli.

On Monday, Aube-Kubel was placed on waivers with the intention of being assigned to AHL Iowa to start the season.

In 22 regular-season games split between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres in 2024-25, Aube-Kubel recorded one goal, two points, 18 shots on goal, and 40 hits.
If he clears waivers, he could serve as a call-up option for Minnesota during the 2025-26 season.
Over the course of his seven-season NHL career, he's played in 304 games, registering 32 goals, 48 assists, 80 points, 672 hits, and 202 penalty minutes.
This provides the Wild with some AHL depth and someone who can play NHL games if needed. He has 56 goals, 61 assists and 117 points in 255 career AHL games as well.
Aube-Kubel was part of the Avalanche's Stanley Cup-winning team in 2022. During that championship season, the 6-foot forward posted 11 goals, 11 assists, and 22 points, along with 123 hits and 41 penalty minutes across 67 games.
We'll see if the former Avalanche Stanley Cup champion can still get any NHL action in the upcoming season with the Wild.
