The Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers have completed a trade in 2024 that sent defenseman Sean Walker to the Avalanche in return for a 2025 conditionally protected 1st-round pick, Ryan Johansen, and a 2026 5th-round pick, as terms of the deal have been fulfilled.
The
Colorado Avalanche made a deal in 2024 that sent upcoming defenseman Sean Walker to the team. In return, they'd send Ryan Johansen as a cap dump, along with a 2025 1st-round pick (conditionally protected), and a 2026 5th-round pick.
While the Avalanche no longer have
Walker on their roster, the terms of the deal have been completed.
The conditions regarding the 1st-round pick were, if the Avalanche's pick was in the top ten spots of the NHL draft, they'd keep it and send their 2026 1st-round pick instead.
Since they've clinched a playoff spot, that scenario is unlikely, as the Flyers will get to keep the pick, while the
Avalanche are headed for the playoffs.
The Flyers will be able to select twice in the 1st-round, while GM Chris McFarland of the
Avalanche won't be making a draft pick in the 1st-round until 2027.
In July, Sean Walker would sign with the Carolina Hurricanes for a five-year, $18 million deal. He's since found himself on the bottom pairing of the Canes roster led by Rod Brind'Amour, though they're still a playoff team.
The 30-year-old defenseman has played 78 games for the Hurricanes, and as a depth option, scored only 15 points (5 goals, 10 assists).
Walker's tenure with the Avalanche was too short, and he played only 18 games and scored 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists).
His departure was a result of a tight salary cap that playoff teams typically have to endure, and now the blue line looks remarkably different this year.
