The greatest goal scorer in NHL history Alex Ovechkin seems to have decided when he will officially retire.

Ovechkin, 39, had previously been asked about retirement during the Capitals' final regular-season game but has dismissed the idea, until today.

Email leak reveals that Alex Ovechkin is set to retire at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Spencer Garrett Ostrow from Athlon Sports writes that Jacob Billington of The Hockey Writers reports that the capitals informed their season ticket holders via email that the 2025-26 NHL season will be Ovechkin's final one.
Here's what the email said...
«OCTOBER - the start of Capitals hockey and Alex Ovechkin's FINAL NHL SEASON»

On April 17, the day of the Capitals' last regular-season game, a reporter raised the topic once more. The matchup was against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ovechkin's longtime rival, Sidney Crosby. The reporter asked if this could be his final game facing Sid.
"I'm not retiring, so..." -Ovechkin

It turns out Ovechkin wasn't bluffing, he still plans to play another season, but fans will only have a few more chances to see him face off against Crosby before the Russian superstar calls it a career.
"This season, Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leader in goals, reaching 897. He passed Wayne Gretzky, known as 'The Great One,' on April 6 in a game against the New York Islanders." -Ostrow

Ovechkin was the first overall pick by Washington in the 2004 NHL Draft and has spent 20 seasons with the team. Throughout his career, he tallied 897 goals and 726 assists, totaling 1,623 points.
The left winger captured the Art Ross Trophy in 2008, he claimed the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy nine times, earned the Hart Memorial Trophy three times, and secured both the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy in 2018.
More information on this situation to follow.
