Rantanen is set for a strong season with his new team, but don't expect him to carry the offense with his goal scoring.
Mikko Rantanen faces big threat in first full season with the Stars.
Jake Tye from The Hockey News writs that the Finnish winger dominated the Stars' series against his former team, the Avalanche, scoring five goals, including a game seven hat trick.
He carried that momentum into the second round against the Winnipeg Jets, netting four more goals over three games. However, his hot streak soon cooled, as he went eight straight games without a goal, a reminder of the scoring drought he experienced entering the season.
"Rantanen finished with 32 goals last season after shuffling around and playing for three different teams but this season he'll have a full training camp with the Stars and will likely be featured on a lethal line with star players like
Roope Hintz and
Jason Robertson. The only problem with this is that neither of them are as lethal as a 70-90 assist player like Rantanen's former linemate in
Nathan MacKinnon." -Tye
Rantanen is likely to see a dip in production, mirroring the decline he experienced at the end of last season. While still a capable goal scorer, hitting 37 goals is a lofty benchmark, one he has only reached twice in his nine NHL seasons.
This will almost certainly limit Rantanen's goal-scoring opportunities, likely pushing him into more of a playmaker role, something he's excelled at with four consecutive 50-assist seasons.
While his point totals could mirror what he produced in Colorado, thanks to elite linemates, it's unlikely he'll match the goal totals he's hit in past seasons.
