According to a new report, the Dallas Stars, longtime divisional rivals of the Colorado Avalanche, are reportedly closing in on a bold move to acquire top-tier power forward Mathieu Oliver before the start of the upcoming NHL season.
Stars reportedly eyeing power-forward Mathieu Oliver in latest development.
Rob Couch from NHL Trade Rumors writes that the Stars don't have much cap space to work with this season, or in the future if they hope to keep all their top players and remain legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.
Still, the team has reportedly set it sights on a specific type of player to add to their roster.
NHL reporter Jeff Marek had this to say concerning Dallas' interest with Oliver...
"Before
Mathieu Olivier re-signed with the (Columbus) Blue Jackets, I'm firmly of the belief that was a target for the Stars. They wanted him or someone like him. I don't think that search is over." -Marek
Oliver signed a six-year deal worth $3 million per year, a contract the Stars couldn't match given their limited cap space, even after losing players in free agency and trading
Mason Marchment. At 28, Olivier just enjoyed a breakout season, though not in the traditional sense. He transformed from fourth-line grinder and occasional fighter into a league-recognized enforcer who combines toughness with offensive contributions.
While he'll remain a bottom-six forward, he tallied 18 goals and 32 points, along with 139 penalty minutes, 80 blocked shots, 306 hits, and regular duty on the penalty kill.
"For the Stars, that isn't something that is easily found, and when it is, teams lock them down as quickly as possible. Dallas signed
Nathan Bastian, but that is the closest thing they have to Olivier, and Bastian isn't particularly close." -Couch
If the Vancouver Canucks decide to go on a fire sale,
Kiefer Sherwood could provide a similar mix of physicality and offensive ability, though without the heavyweight fighting edge.
Sherwood could be a realistic trade target for the Stars at the deadline if the Canucks fall out of contention. That said, a player like Olivier is much harder to replace, and the Blue Jackets did well to retain him.
