Jonathan Drouin joined the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent in 2023 and has played on one-year contracts for the past two seasons. Continuing with short-term deals would be a smart approach for him in future contract discussions.
After his breakout 2023-24 season, many expected Jonathan Drouin to price himself out of Colorado, but he opted to stay with the Avalanche for another year.
Colorado needs to re-sign Drouin this summer.
During the 2023-24 season, Drouin appeared in 79 of the 82 regular season games. I even suggested that his tenure with Colorado had the potential to follow a path similar to Valeri Nichushkin's, writes Graham Tiedtke.
"The 2024-25 season was not an ideal one for the 30 year old Drouin. He played in just 43 games, registering 11 goals and 26 assists, while averaging 18:11 of ice time a night. That average time on ice stat is actually the exact same as the year before. Had he been able to play more than the 43 games, he likely would have set a career high in that category." -Tiedke
One potential drawback for Drouin is that, since being promoted to the top line, he has spent very little time playing away from Nathan MacKinnon.
Ideally, the Avalanche can bring Drouin back on another short-term deal, aiming for him to play even more games next season and build on his career highs.
The team will need to convince him to stick around for another year, and betting on his health and continued growth could benefit him if he plans to explore free agency in 2026.
