Former longtime Dallas Stars standout Joe Pavelski spoke ahead of the 2025 American Century Championship, a celebrity golf event featuring over 90 athletes and celebrities.

Among the topics covered was Mikko Rantanen's path during the 2024-25 NHL season, which saw him move from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes, and ultimately land in Dallas on a long-term deal.

Stars legend turns heads with unexpected comments towards Mikko Rantanen.

Andrew Hughes from The Sporting News writes that Pavelski wasn't fully up to speed on everything that transpired in Raleigh, but he was aware that, at the very least, Rantanen didn't have a positive experience during his stint with the Hurricanes.
«Happy for the Stars that he ended up finding his way there, because he's a tremendous player. He's proven that over, you know, the course of his career. A big body that holds on to pucks. He's a great piece to have, you know, playing against him more than anything, and hearing about him a little bit. It was pretty nice for the Stars to pick him up." -Pavelski

He also shared his perspective on why Rantanen requested a trade from the Avalanche, drawing hom his own experiences to better understand the mindset of the 28-year-old player.
"The whole Carolina thing, I don't fully understand, obviously, as the players that are here. You have a right to go and do what you want and where you believe you're going to enjoy playing. And for whatever reason, that didn't happen there. «But I don't know what happened exactly in Colorado. It felt like a lack of communication, whether the agent was involved, the team's involved, where they're going. I do know we've played Colorado a number of years, and they were always worried about their depth. You know, and that's where I think we got to them a little bit at times in the playoffs. The depth of our team was able to push us over the top against them." -Pavelski

Dallas made a strong push to the Western Conference Finals in 2025, and there's a chance the 2022 Stanley Cup champion could help lead the Stars to an even deeper playoff run next season. Regardless, Pavelski believes the effort was worthwhile, despite how things unfolded during Rantanen's time with the Hurricanes.
