It cost them a hefty package, highlighted by top Avs prospect Calum Ritchie and a first-round pick, but they managed to persuade both Nelson and the New York Islanders to agree to the deal, effectively ending Nelson's 12-season run in Long Island.

Gabriel Foley from Pro Hockey Rumors writes that Nelson finished the regular season on a high note, tallying 13 points in 19 games with Colorado. However, he cooled off in the playoffs, managing just four assists and no goals over seven games.

That disappointing season appeared to position him for unrestricted free agency this summer. But as June approaches, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports that there's growing mutual interest between Nelson and the Avalanche in working out an extension.

The major sticking point in a potential new deal is likely to be Nelson's salary. He just completed a six-year, $36 million contract signed during his time with the Islanders, and after putting up three seasons with 60 points over the last four years, he's in line for a raise.

According to CapWages, Nelson could command a new contract worth as much as $21 million over three years, Foley also writes.

That kind of price tag might force Colorado to get creative at the negotiating table, and could edge Nelson closer to testing the market, as he eyes the opportunity to choose a new destination for the first time in his NHL career.
