A new report has surfaced linking Colorado Avalanche star forward Martin Necas to the New Jersey Devils, with the latest trade proposal suggesting a blockbuster deal that could shake up both franchises.
Necas has already been tied to multiple trade rumours following reports of his frustration early in his Colorado tenure.
Latest trade rumour has Martin Necas landing in New Jersey.
Jackson Weber from The Sporting News writes that given how Colorado dealt with the Mikko Rantanen situation, the question now is whether they'll risk letting Necas walk for nothing in free agency.
That's a dilemma the front office is undoubtedly weighing right now. If they determine moving the 26-year-old is the best course of action, a potential one-for-one swap with the Devils could make sense for both clubs.
"The deal would see the Avs and Devils swap high-end wingers, sending Martin Necas to New Jersey, where he would presumably sign an extension, while Timo Meier heads the other way to Colorado. Meier is locked up for six more seasons on an eight-year, $70.4 million contract that was signed back in 2023." -Weber
If the Avalanche decide to move Necas, the return will almost certainly need to be NHL-ready talent that keeps them in the Stanley Cup hunt. Draft picks and prospects aren't what general manager Chris MacFarland is after.
"Timo Meier is a three-time 30-goal scorer in the prime of his career who would be a very interesting fit. He provides a power forward skill set with a heavy shot and physical style of play that is built for playoff hockey and much different from that of Necas. Meier can play anywhere in the top six and slot in on the top power-play unit on his one-time side across from Nathan MacKinnon." -Weber
Cap space remains tight in Colorado, but moving an injured Logan O'Connor to LTIR could free up the room needed to make the deal financially feasible.
While the Devils wait to see what Luke Hughes' extension might look like, GM Tom Fitzgerald should have little trouble fitting a long-term deal for Necas into the team's plans.
