Missing out on Martin Necas could pave the way for a surprising turn of events, as the Colorado Avalanche are continually being linked to a with Stanley Cup champion Nazem Kadri in what would be a stunning development this offseason.
Since the Calgary Flames dropped out of playoff contention in 2023, speculation surrounding Kadri's future with the team has been constant, fueling ongoing debates about whether a trade could be on the horizon.
Avalanche reportedly eyeing shocking reunion with Nazem Kadri.
Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that at 34, Kadri has spent three seasons with the Flames since lifting the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.
He's continued to produce at a steady pace, showing little to no drop-off in performance. Kadri still has four years remaining on his contract, which carries a $7 million cap hit.
"Kadri has 11 months left of deciding his own fate. Next July, his full no-move clause shifts to a 13-team no-trade clause. That means the veteran center has less than a year to work with the Flames on a trade if he wants to completely decide where his next destination is." -Deen
Sportnet senior writer Ryan Dixon remains convinced that a reunion between Kadri and the Avalanche is a realistic possibility. In a recent piece outlining five logical landing spots for the Stanley Cup champion, Dixon included Colorado among the potential suitors.
"Dixon noted that if Martin Necas is still available and an option to be moved, the Avs should entertain a trade that involves him and Kadri, if Necas is willing to commit to Southern Alberta. If that's the case, I'd imagine the Avs would receive another piece to make the trade worthwhile, given the age of both Necas and Kadri." -Deen
In this scenario, Dixon suggests Brock Nelson could move to the wing, allowing the Avalanche to roll with three center options in their top six, reuniting the formidable MacKinnon-Kadri duo. It would also mean every forward in Colorado's top six would be over 30 years old.
"More importantly, I don't feel like the Avs should use Necas on an almost 35-year-old if they actually do move him. The team needs an injection of youth in their forward group and Necas provides that. If he doesn't sign, he should be dealt for someone else that fits the bill." -Deen
We'll see how it all unfolds as the months progress.
