A newly released report details how changes in the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement are expected to shape Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar's next NHL contract and what it could mean for his future earnings.

Makar's contract is set to expire after the 2026-27 NHL season.

Cale Makar receives some big news concerning his next NHL contract.

Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that when the NHL and NHLPA agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement earlier this summer, one of the biggest questions was when the changes would actually take effect. Notably, this marked the first time in the Gary Bettman era that a deal was finalized more than a year before the existing CBA was set to expire.
"On the latest 32 Thoughts, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman sat down with Marty Walsh and Ron Hainsey, who head the NHLPA. Hainsey confirmed that none of the changes to contract length and salary structure will be put into play until mid-September.

With the change, players re-signing with their current clubs can only sign for up to seven years and unrestricted free agents signing with a new club can only lock in for a maximum of six years. There will also be a 60% cap on how much of a contract can be allocated toward signing bonuses." -Deen

That's a win for the Avalanche, as it allows them to operate under the current CBA when negotiating extensions for Martin Necas and, more importantly, Makar.

Makar's next contract had long been uncertain, with speculation that the new rules would take effect on July 1, 2026.
However, Hainsey later clarified that wasn't the case. Since Makar can't sign an extension until that very date, the confirmation comes as major news for Colorado.
"In order for the Avalanche to get Makar locked up for the current maximum term of eight years, they have to sign him before Sept. 16, 2026. That'll give them two and a half months next summer to get a contract signed." -Deen

I'd imagine the Avalanche will aim to finalize things quickly, though that isn't always how it plays out. For instance, MacKinnon didn't put pen to paper on his early extension in 2022 until just before training camp in September. Similarly, as of now, Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have yet to reach a new deal.
