In the lead-up to the 2025-26 NHL season, a newly released report has made a bold prediction regarding Colorado Avalanche star defenseman Cale Makar, naming him the early favourite to win the Norris Trophy for a second consecutive season.
New report delivers wild prediction for Cale Makar.
Nestor Quixtan from Mile High Sticking writes that Makar was a dominant force last season, tallying 30 goals and over 90 points, offensive numbers that would mark a career year for most NHL forwards, let alone a defenseman.
"But for Makar, a defenseman, it's mind-shocking. Makar became the first blue liner to score 30 goals in roughly three decades. He did so while playing solid defense and lining up against the opposition's best players." -Quixtan
He also played a crucial role in leading Team Canada to gold at the 4 Nations Face-Off. With that kind of performance on both the international and NHL stages, it's hard to argue against Makar being the league's top defenseman heading into next season.
"He'll face tough competition from the likes of Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, Miro Heiskanen of the Dallas Stars, or Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets. But at this point, the Norris Trophy is Makar's to lose." -Quixtan
Makar is poised to keep adding to his already stellar career resume. With steady support from him longtime partner Devon Toews, one of the best defensemen in the world in his own right, it's hard to imagine anyone else prying the Norris Trophy away from his next season.
If the Avalanche's defensive core lives up to its potential, the team could be well-positioned for another deep Stanley Cup run.
