Latest report drops jaw-dropping prediction about Avalanche's top netminder for next season
A recent report has dropped a startling prediction about what could be in store for Colorado Avalanche starting goalie Mackenzie Blackwood in the upcoming NHL season, leaving fans and analysts eager to see how it unfolds.
A key move for the Avalanche last season was acquiring
Scott Wedgewood and, most importantly, Blackwood.
Latest report drops shocking prediction concerning Mackenzie Blackwood.
Stefano Rubino from The Hockey News writes that originally drafted 42nd overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft as the projected future goalie for the New Jersey Devils, Blackwood was later traded to San Jose before landing a fresh opportunity with a contending team.
Embracing the chance with his childhood favourite, the Avalanche, Blackwood kicked off his tenure with an impressive 8-1-1 record and a .940 SV%, finishing the season 22-12-3 with a .913 SV% and a 2.33 GAA.
"As much as Wedgewood was great, he has never been a true 'starter' in the NHL. His most extensive playing time was 32 games during the 2022-23 season with the Dallas Stars. It wouldn't be until December that General Manager Chris MacFarland had found his starter in Blackwood." -Rubino
With his stellar play and proven track record, Blackwood is poised to be the backbone for the Avalanche as they chase another Stanley Cup.
When the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup with
Darcy Kuemper and Pavel Francouz, the goalies held strong despite an elite team in front of them.
Kuemper posted a .921 SV% and 2.54 GAA in the regular season, finishing at .902 SV% and 2.57 GAA, while Francouz filled in admirably with a .906 SV% and 2.81 GAA in ten games.
"The Avalanche aren't asking the two to be world beaters in cases like
Andrei Vasilevskiy with the Tampa Bay Lightning or
Sergei Bobrovsky with the Florida Panthers." -Rubino
A strong last line of defense, ready to keep the team in the game when the offense stalls, giving the elite talent in front of them a chance to secure the win.
