Before the season kicks off, Avalanche stars Devon Toews and Brock Nelson gave back to the community by hosting a clinic for kids ages 7-13. Afterward, each participant received a hockey bag filled with brand-new equipment and a custom nameplate signed by Toews.

It was an unforgettable experience for the kids, which is an initiative the Avalanche are trying to do more of.

Devon Toews and Brock Nelson Create Memorable Moment for Military Families.

Coby Maeir of NHL.com covered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 20 kids, an experience that also resonated very deeply with Devon Toews.
"Toews said that it's important for him to participate in this event, one that he called his favorite of the year, because he's had family members in the Canadian military and members of his wife's family have been in the United States military." -Maeir

Toews continued to speak on the importance of military members and what their families have to endure all year long. To take them away from that with a moment the kids will remember forever is something truly remarkable.
"A lot of them are gone from their families and we get to give their kids here an opportunity to be on the ice and have some fun and then get some new gear, too and kind of get their kind of Christmas moment here in September, which is really, really cool.» -Toews

Nelson echoed Toews' remarks and even brought two of his own children to the event to witness firsthand the challenges other families face. Both players also highlighted how hockey is becoming increasingly inaccessible for many, noting that giving the kids brand-new equipment provides crucial financial relief for parents.
"I know how expensive it is. How difficult it is to get these kids into it because of the price tag that comes with it. So if we're able to get them a set of gear that can last them a couple years and give them the opportunity to go out there and have some fun, that's what we want to do." -Toews

While we put a lot of focus on the performance of the Avalanche's on-ice performance, it is important to note there are more important things in the world than winning hockey games.
