Pittsburgh Penguins icon Sidney Crosby continues to be a regular name in offseason trade speculation across the NHL.
Former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque has only intensified the speculation, adding more fuel to the growing buzz surrounding Crosby's future.
Is Sidney Crosby heading to Colorado?
Rexwell Villas from Athlon Sports writes that Laraque stirred the pout during the 2025 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles, posting on X that he's "hearing there's a very good chance that Crosby will play somewhere else," adding more intrigue to the swirling trade rumors.
"That post was shared by 'Spittin' Chiclets' on Instagram, and it somehow caught the attention of Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon." -Villas
Crosby still has two years remaining on his current deal, carrying an $8.7 million cap hit. The three-time Stanley Cup champion is running out of time to chase a fourth title, with age becoming an increasingly significant factor.
"He will be 38 years old in August, and he may not have enough time to wait for Pittsburgh to become a legitimate championship contender again. Pittsburgh has not been to the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2022 and has only won 72 games in the last two seasons." -Villas
A move to a contender like the Avalanche, Stanley Cup champions in 2022, could significantly increase Crosby's chances of adding a fourth ring before his career winds down.
"At the same time, such a move for the Penguins should get them additional assets. In the 2024-25 season, Crosby showed he can still get things done on the ice, as he recorded 33 goals and 58 assists for 91 points, while missing only two games." -Villas
For now, Crosby remains with the Penguins, the franchise that selected him first overall in the 2005 NHL Draft and where he's spent his entire legendary career.
