Former Colorado Avalanche defenseman Calvin de Haan has stunned fans with an unexpected career move and is reportedly close to signing with Rögle in the Swedish Hockey League, marking a surprising new chapter in his professional hockey journey.
Last season, de Haan divided his time between the Avalanche and the New York Rangers, appearing in 44 games for Colorado and three for New York.
Calvin de Haan keeps his hockey career alive with surprising move.
Jacob Smeds from The Hockey News writes that de Haan has previously been connected to several SHL clubs, including Brynäs, but reports indicate he is now just a few contract details away from joining Rögle.
"The defenseman from Carp, Ontario, was traded to the Rangers along with
Juuso Parssinen, a second-round pick, and a fourth-round pick in 2025. In return, the Avalanche received
Ryan Lindgren, Jimmy Vesey, and
Hank Kempf." -Smeds
De Haan would join the expanding group of players making the move from the NHL to the SHL. Below is a list of notable players who have signed with Swedish clubs.
"The biggest name to sign in the SHL since the lockout seasons. The hype around Bäckström has been huge, and he's by far the signing that has received the most attention ahead of the season start." -Smeds
Djurgården, another team in the SHL, bolstered their roster with a high-profile addition in former Avalanche forward Charles Hudon, who most recently played for the Ontario Reign in the AHL.
Last season, Hudon tallied 20 goals and 64 points in 67 games, showcasing the offensive firepower he brings to a Djurgården squad entering the SHL after promotion from the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan to the SHL.
