Former Colorado Avalanche defenseman Calvin de Haan is facing a surprising career crossroads, and his next move is already drawing significant attention and speculation across the NHL.
After bouncing around the NHL in recent seasons, veteran defenseman de Haan now looks poised to take his next contract overseas.

Tom Banks from House of Hockey writes that the last few seasons have been tough for Calvin de Haan in the NHL, but the 2024-25 campaign proved to be the most difficult. Splitting time as a depth defenseman between the Avalanche and the New York Rangers, the 34-year-old veteran managed just 8 assists in 47 games and grew openly frustrated with how things played out in New York.
Now, it seems his NHL career may be coming to an end as he prepares to move on.
After failing to land a contract or generate much NHL interest this summer, reports now indicate that de Hann is drawing attention from Brynäs IF in Sweden as he looks to continue his career overseas.
"While this may be a step down from the NHL, Brynas IF and the Swedish Hockey League are seen as a very high standard in Europe, and given the level that de Haan can still play at, this would be a perfect fit for him." -Banks
Since leaving the Blackhawks after the 2021-22 season, de Haan has bounced around the league with stops in Carolina, Tampa Bay, New York, and Colorado. Following a frustration stint with the Rangers this past year and continued struggles on the ice, it's little surprise that NHL interest in the veteran has been limited.
If this is the end of de Haan's NHL run, he leaves with 149 points in 679 games across six teams, though his leadership and experience could always earn him a return.
