The Colorado Avalanche have been handed a significant career update regarding one of their top defensive prospects, Sean Behrens, a development that could have major implications for the organization's future lineup and prospect plans.

Behrens was drafted in the second-round (61st overall) in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

Sean Behrens hit with big career update ahead of new season.

Brennan Vogt from Mile High Hockey writes that Behrens is an offensive-minded defenseman known for his puck-moving skills. Before a challenging last season (which we'll cover shortly), he spent three years at the University of Denver, helping the Pioneers capture two championships in that span.
During his time at DU, Behrens earned multiple accolades, including selections to the NCHC All-Rookie Team and being named NCHC Defenseman of the Year.
"Behrens, despite being small in stature, did not let that stop him during his collegiate career. He was recognized equally for delivering blows as for enduring them. In 112 contests with the Pioneers, Behrens finished with 10 goals and 71 assists. The eye-popping stat for him was his plus-45 before deciding to turn pro." -Vogt
After his junior year at DU, Behrens signed an entry-level deal with the Avalanche and joined the AHL's Colorado Eagles on an amateur tryout. He quickly settled in, recording his first pro point on a Peter Holland goal during his debut on April 20, 2024.
"During training camp last fall, Behrens was fighting for a puck in the corner during a scrimmage and tore his ACL. It forced him to miss the entire season for the Eagles (72 regular season and nine playoff games). He stayed with the Eagles and rehab his knee and began skating right before the playoffs ended." -Vogt

The Barrington, Illinois, native is set to be a key piece of the Eagles' defensive core this season. Having not played since April 26, 2024, he may need an adjustment period, but if injuries hit the Avalanche's blue line, Behrens could make his NHL debut this year.
