In a surprising and unexpected development, the Montreal Canadiens have reportedly turned their attention to former Colorado Avalanche phenom Casey Mittelstaft, signalling a potential high-profile move that could shake up the roster.

Following his trade to Boston, the Bruins are said to be exploring ways to part ways with Mittelstadt.

Canadiens reportedly eyeing a deal to acquire Casey Mittelstadt.

Scott Roche from Causeway Crowd writes that for much of this offseason, Bruins forwards Pavel Zacha and Mittelstadt have been linked to trade rumours. With their names consistently surfacing, it's hard not to think there could be some truth behind the speculation.
Travis Yost of TSN joined The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro to discuss potential trade targets for the Canadiens, specifically involving the Bruins. That's right: Boston and Montreal could be exploring a deal that benefits the Canadiens. Yost highlighted Zacha, while Marinaro added Casey Mittelstadt to the mix.
"Pavel Zacha would be a very interesting name. They've got him and Lindholm down the middle right now. They sure do (have Mittlestadt). I think there is a bit of redundancy there. I think no doubt about it, they miss the playoffs this year." -Yost

Yost also mentioned Charlie Coyle, who was traded from the Avalanche to the Columbus Blue Jackets, as another potential target for the Canadiens this year.
If Montreal hopes to pry either Zacha or Mittelstadt away from Don Sweeney, the Bruins will likely demand a significant return. Both players are under contract through 2025-26, with Zacha carrying a $4.75 million cap hit and Mittelstadt $5.75 million.
"It would be surprising if Sweeney deals either player to another heated division rival, but his history of trading within the division in the last year has been eye-opening, from sending Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, and defenseman Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs." -Yost

It remains to be seen if anything comes of this, but it would be surprising to see a deal before the trade deadline. If Boston steps aside, Don Sweeney could very well make another move within the division, this time with the Canadiens. Given his recent track record, it's not too far-fetched.
