Former Colorado Avalanche defenseman Brad Hunt has made a bold and unexpected career move, one that's already raising eyebrows and sparking conversation among fans and analysts alike.
Canadian defenseman Brad Hunt's latest deal has fans talking.
Derek O'Brien from The Hockey News writes that having spent his entire career in North America, including parts of 10 NHL seasons, this marks Brad Hunt's first-ever contract to play professionally in Europe.
Here's what the club's sports director Ari-Pekka Pajuluoma had to say after the team's announcement.
"Bringing Brad to Vaasa is fantastic. He has been a very popular person in every team he has played for, but we expect, above all, good play on the ice from Brad. His strengths lie in the game with the puck, and in addition, he has an incredible shot from the point, so we also expect him to have a role on the power play.» -Pajuluoma
Between 2013 and 2023, Hunt appeared in 288 NHL regular-season games, suiting up for the Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators, Vegas Golden Knights, Minnesota Wild, Vancouver Canucks, and Colorado Avalanche.
Over that span, he tallied 86 points and 52 penalty minutes. Hunt also played in five playoff games for Minnesota and Colorado, picking up a single minor penalty.
"He spent the entire 2024-25 season in the AHL with the Hershey Bears, recording 20 points in 43 regular-season and playoff games." -O'Brien
In order to fund Hunt's contract, Vassan Sport had to raise more than 90,000 euros ($105,000 USD) though a combination of sponsorships and fan donations.
