Former Colorado Avalanche $17.25M forward Casey Mittelstadt is suddenly facing an uncertain future in the NHL, as a shocking new development has put his career trajectory in serious doubt.

Mittelstadt heads into a pivotal season, one that will determine whether he can live up to the three-year, $17.25 million contract he signed last summer.

Nestor Quixtan from Heavy.com writes that Mittelstadt landed in Boston after being shipped out of Colorado in the Charlie Coyle trade, but his tenure with the Bruins has been underwhelming. If he can't turn things around soon, a trip to the waiver wire could be in his future.
"The Bruins hope that the 26-year-old can carve out a permanent spot for himself in the team's lineup. However, he'll have to hit the ground running in training camp this fall. The expectation will be that Mittelstadt can show he's a capable top-six forward with upside despite his age. But if he can't, the Bruins may have no choice but to put him on waivers. It would be a costly move, but a necessary one given the circumstances." -Quixtan

Boston likely wouldn't have to worry about losing Mittelstadt on waivers. His hefty $5.75 million cap hit alone would deter most clubs from making a claim, unless a team in dire need of a center had the cap space to absorb his full contract.
"That's both a good and a bad thing for the Bruins. Firstly, it's a good thing because they wouldn't lose Mittlestadt for nothing. If the club wanted to trade him later on, they could recoup some assets in return.

The downside is that even if he reports to the AHL, the team wouldn't be able to get out from under his cap hit. While that may not necessarily be an issue at this point, it would be somewhat of an inconvenience for the Bruins." -Quixtan

The Bruins may choose to test the waters during training camp. If rival clubs are hit with injuries or roster gaps down the middle, Mittelstadt could suddenly become a more appealing waiver option, freeing up valuable cap space for Boston to pursue another center.
