Explosive new report exposes Colorado as the cause for Pittsburgh's current collapse
A groundbreaking new report has emerged, exposing the Colorado Avalanche as the main cause driving the current collapse of the Pittsburgh Penguins, shedding light on the significant impact Colorado has had on Pittsburgh's struggles.
The Penguins nearly missed out on hiring their current GM, all because of circumstances involving the Avalanche.
Avalanche in the hot seat after latest revelation.
Nick Horwat from Breakaway On Si writes that Kyle Dubas has served as the president and general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins since being let go by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2013.
Interestingly, before the Penguins had the chance to bring him on board, and even before the Maple Leafs officially parted ways with him, Dubas nearly joined the Avalanche front office.
"Dubas joined the Cam & Strick Podcast and discussed an opportunity that arose in 2017 when the Avalanche were looking to make changes within their front office. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Dubas speaking with the Avalanche in 2017 but was never able to identify for what role." -Horwat
According to Dubas, the role he nearly took with the Avalanche was that of general manager.
«There had been, obviously the situation the spring before where I had the chance to leave and to be a GM elsewhere. It didn't come to happen for a number of reasons.» -Dubas
At the time, Dubas was serving as an assistant general manager with the Maple Leafs, working closely alongside Lou Lamoriello. In 2018, when the organization chose not to renew Lamoriello's contract, Dubas stepped up to take over as GM in Toronto.
Lamoriello played a major role in Dubas' decision to remain in Toronto instead of pursuing the potential GM position in Colorado.
«Lou's view of it at the time was like, 'you know all the people here, you know the players, you know the ins and outs of it. That was a strong push for me to stay.» -Dubas
Dubas acknowledged that he hadn't achieved nearly as much success with the Maple Leafs, while the Avalanche thrived on their own path.
"What sort of alternate history could have emerged had Lamoriello not talked Dubas into staying in Toronto? Would Dubas also be a Cup champion with the Avalanche? Maybe the Maple Leafs find a different front office leader and go on a successful run of their own." -Horwat
That said, the Penguins and their fans remain confident that Dubas will build a winning team in Pittsburgh, one capable of bringing the Stanley Cup back to the Steel City.
