The Colorado Avalanche recently signed one of their top prospects to an entry-level deal, but it seams unlikely he'll join the team for the 2025-26 season.
On Friday, the Avalanche inked Ilya Nabokov to a two-year entry-level contract. The 22-year-old goaltender was Colorado's highest pick in the 2024 Draft, chosen 38th overall after GM Chris MacFarland traded down from the first round.
Some big news was announced on Sunday concerning Colorado Avalanche top goalie prospect.
Aarif Deen from Colorado Hockey Now writes that it's almost unreal how highly the organization regards Nabokov since drafting him. With impressive KHL stats, he appears to have a strong shot at making a succesful transition to the NHL level.
"But before he gets there, Nabokov will spend another year in the KHL. Evan Rawal of the Colorado Gazette has been all over this story since before the signing was announced. Rawal reported that Nabokov is slated to be loaned to the KHL for the 2025-26 season before making the jump to North America after the season (sometime in March or April)." -Deen
He'll likely join the AHL's Colorado Eagles at that point if they're still playing.
Nabokov, 22, played the 2024-25 season with the Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the KHL, compiling a 23-17-6 record along with a 2.22 goals-against average, a .923 save percentage, and three shutouts over 49 regular-season games. He also suited up for five playoff contests, posting a 2.13 GAA and a .920 save percentage.
This draft selection marked the highest the Avalanche have taken a goaltender since they picked Philippe Sauvé 38th overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
