It appears that Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson is expected to retire from the NHL as the 37-year-old returned to the avalanche to have one more shot at winning a Stanley Cup.

After spending last season with the Philadelphia Flyers, Johnson was traded to the Avalanche on March 7th in exchange for right winger Givani Smith.

Johnson has had a slow start to his second stint with the Avalanche

Johnson has played six games with the Avalanche since his return, and he has had a slow start considering he has no points and only two penalty minutes.
Over the past several years, Johnson has not cobbled together a full season due to injuries especially in 2024 when he only played 22 games for the Flyers.
He has just recovered from a lower body injury and has rejoined the lineup as he had missed three games.
It's safe to say if he does retire from the game, he has accomplished what he has set out for as he has won the Stanley Cup with the team, has played over 1000 games 10 has scored 94 goals with 252 assists for 346 points along with 553 penalty minutes.

Former Avalanche defenseman also potentially to retire

A former Avalanche defenseman in Tyson Barrie also is on the list of potential players who may retire from the game as his career has gone from being the top pairing defenseman with the avalanche and the driver of their power play to a player who has been cut from rosters and only signed to PTO's.
Currently with the Calgary Flames, very was drafted by the avalanche in 2009, third round 64th overall.
His career began in the NHL in 2011 with the avalanche where he had spent eight seasons with the team where he was then traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He had three years with the Edmonton Oilers, two years with the Nashville Predators and this year with the Flames. Throughout his career, he has played 822 games, scoring 110 goals for 398 assists for 508 points and as 263 penalty minutes Along with 212 power play points.
The Avalanche have seven games remaining in their schedule and their next game will be against the lowly Chicago Blackhawks as they will take them on Wednesday April 2nd on the road and game time will be 9:30 PM Eastern.
