The Colorado Eagles had modest expectations for second-year player Mark Senden, but ended up receiving much more than anticipated.
The signing was so minor last summer that the Colorado Eagles didn't even make an official announcement.
Colorado Avalanche prospect Mark Senden continues to impress in the AHL with the Eagles.
The two-way AHL contract of 27-year-old Mark Senden has proven valuable for the Colorado Eagles. Although he was expected to spend most of his time with the Utah Grizzlies, the forward has been remarkably consistent while playing in Loveland.
Brennan Vogt from Mile High Hockey writes that the former North Dakota Fighting Hawks captain spent nearly all of last season with the Florida Everblades. Senden appeared in just 11 AHL games with the Charlotte Checkers (FLA) without registering any points. He ended the year with the Everblades, hoisting the Kelly Cup and contributing 15 points during the playoffs. This performance caught the attention of the Colorado Eagles, who signed him to a one-year two-way AHL contract.
Senden has appeared in 61 AHL games for the Eagles, recording 8 goals and 15 assists throughout his season.
"Head coach Aaron Schneekloth has used Senden on all four lines, playing both center and left wing. Injuries forced the Eagles to put Senden into the lineup early in the season and he never looked back. He has been a pest in the neutral zone, making it difficult for the opposing team to get through. Despite his five foot ten-inch frame, Senden packs quite a hit too. He's often seen hitting players, separating them from the puck, and stealing it." -Vogt
Initially an unknown addition, he has now earned a regular spot in the lineup. With fewer than 150 professional games played, he remains attractive to management since he's not classified as a veteran under the player development rule. To support the Eagles' rebuild, re-signing him should be a priority, writes Vogt.
"Senden is in position for an extension with the Eagles over the summer and has been one of the biggest surprises this season." -Vogt
If he continues his strong play, maybe we'll see him dawning an Avalanche sweater in the near future.
The Colorado Eagles
currently trail the Abbotsford Canucks 1-0 in their AHL Pacific Final series. Game 2 is set Sunday at 7:00pm MT.
