The Colorado Avalanche thought they only had one elite defenseman in Cale Makar, but there's another in the AHL, with the Colorado Eagles' own Jacob MacDonald.

Colorado Eagles defenseman Jacob MacDonald has surprised us all this season when he broke an AHL record.
With 31 goals scored this season with the Eagles, he broke the AHL record for goals scored in a single season by a defenseman.
A record that had been previously at 30 by defenseman John Slaney during the 1999-2000 season.
MacDonald's 31st tally was a bright spot in a 4-2 loss in Ontario, as the 31st goal of his career during the 2024-2025 season came after his 30th at 8:09 of the third period.
MacDonald's 31st also put him above Bakersfield Condors defenseman Connor Carrick, who ranks second in the league with 17 goals this season.
The Colorado Avalanche journeyman has played 10 seasons of professional hockey and has scored 248 total points during his career (99 goals, 149 assists) in 339 AHL games.
He's played for the San Jose Barracuda, Springfield Thunderbirds, Albany Devils, and Springfield Falcons during his longAHL career.
The veteran defenseman has also seen a significant amount of NHL action, playing 135 games split between the Florida Panthers, San Jose Sharks, and Colorado Avalanche, scoring 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists).
It's MacDonald's, not Makar.
