Colorado Avalanche veteran defenseman Brent Burns opens up about the gruelling realities and challenges players face during the opening week of NHL training camp, sharing candid insights from this years of experience in the league.

The 40-year-old, signed to a one-year deal this summer, is set to begin his 22nd NHL season, and his first with the Avalanche.

Burns spills the hard truth about Avalanche training camp.

At the start of training camp, Burns told CBS's Jack Lowenstein that despite his experience, he still feels the same nerves as any player beginning a new NHL season.
"You know, the good feelings for me coming in, it's not just another training camp. You get antsy before you go to bed. You're nervous in the morning, no idea what to expect. It was a great practice. It was tough." -Burns

Burns joins the Avalanche's veteran defense, providing depth and leadership rather than a top-pair role, though he could still log key minutes.
"Returning to the Avalanche are key, past mid-season acquisitions in centermen Brock Nelson and Jack Drury, as well as forward Martin Necas, who along with Drury was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Avs Stanley Cup champion Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes. That was before Rantanen was subsequently traded to the Dallas Stars, which proved to be pivotal in the first round elimination of the Avs by the Stars." -Lowenstein

The Avs remain led by Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and Devon Toews, with captain Gabriel Landeskog returning healthy.
Burns will soon hit the ice as Colorado opens its preseason at Magnus Arena against the Utah Mammoth.
Colorado kicks off the regular season in Los Angeles against the Kings on Tuesday, October 7.
