Colorado Avalanche top forward prospect Cooper Gay is at the center of a surprising new update that has quickly grabbed the attention of fans and analysts alike, leaving many eager to see what this could mean for his future with the organization.

Gay, undrafted, signed his first professional contract in March 2024.

Stunning new report raises questions concerning Avalanche top prospect Cooper Gay.

Brennan Vogt from Mile High Hockey writes that Gay attended the Avalanche's Development Camp the previous summer, standing out despite recovering from an injury. After his college season concluded, he joined the Colorado Eagles and appeared in two games.
"Gay attended the University of Saint Thomas for the last three years where he set personal bests every season. In his last season there, he was nearly a point per game player.

He served as the alternate captain of the team in his last season while leading them to a 17-13-2-1 record. Gay's 19 goals would place him second on the team in scoring and third overall in points with 30." -Vogt
The Edina, Minnesita, native combines strong hands with impressive skating ability, using both to generate speed through the neutral zone and navigate around opponents. His imposing size, 6-foot-5 and over 220 pounds at 23 years old, further enhances his game.
"When he attacks in the offensive zone, he can use his reach to prevent the defenseman from getting the puck. When the opponent is along the boards, Gay can shut them down quickly with a smashing hit that will knock them off of the puck." -Vogt

Last season, Gay made his AHL debut with the Eagles on April 4, 2025, scoring on his first pro shot. Signed to a two-year, entry-level contract starting this season, he's expected to anchor the Eagles' middle-six, with NHL potential if injuries strike in Denver.
