The Colorado Avalanche are taking notice after Evgeni Malkin's recent comments, which may have confirmed that Sidney Crosby's storied tenue with the Pittsburgh Penguins is coming to an end, potentially reshaping the landscape of the NHL.
Malkin seemingly confirmed that his legendary partnership with Crosby in the NHL may be coming to an end.
Malkin's latest comments hints at Crosby's inevitable exit in Pittsburgh.
Jack Sutherland from Hawks Insider writes that on the second day of training camp, Malkin hinted he might play another season in Pittsburgh or consider a trade elsewhere, citing Brad Marchand's move from Boston to Florida last year, which led to a Stanley Cup.
Per analyst Josh Yohe:
"Geno Malkin just spoke. He finally said he wouldn't say no to staying. This could be his last year, though; he'd consider an additional year (elsewhere). He also said he'd been thinking long and hard about Brad Marchand's Stanley Cup Final victory in Florida and indicated the no-movement clause could be waived. Developing story." -Yohe
The 2025-26 season could mark the end of an era for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with Malkin nearing retirement and Crosby still surrounded by trade rumours.
While Crosby stays committed to leading the Penguins back into playoff contention, the broader hockey world watches the situation unfold with great anticipation.
The 38-year-old is set to start the first year of his two-year, $17.4 million extension with the Penguins, earning $8.7 million per season.
Malkin's potential departure may even prompt Crosby to consider leaving Pittsburgh as well.
